چکیده

The members of the Gram-positive endospore-forming bacteria that made up the genus Bacillus have been gradually subdivided, during the last few years, into a number of new genera such as Alicyclobacillus, Aneuribacillus, Brevibacillus, Gracilibacillus, Paenibacillus, Salibacillus, Ureibacillus, and Virgibacillus. Nazina et al. in 2001 created the genus Geobacillus based around Bacillus (now Geobacillus) stearothermophilus DSM22 as the type strain. The description included two new species of hydrocarbon-oxidizing bacteria isolated from hightemperature oilfields, and the transfer of six members of genetic group 5 thermophilic species of Bacillus to the new genus. Other additions followed and, most of these species, shared the ability to grow at elevated temperatures and degrade hydrocarbons. The taxonomy of geobacilli, hydrocarbon degradation, molecular basis of thermophily, survival, and ecological roles in the environment and possible exploitation potential will be reviewed in this chapter.

Genomic analysis of six new Geobacillus strains reveals highly conserved carbohydrate degradation architectures and strategies

In this work we report the whole genome sequences of six new Geobacillus xylanolytic strains along with the genomic analysis of their capability to degrade carbohydrates. The six sequenced Geobacillus strains described here have a range of GC contents from 43.9% to 52.5% and clade with named Geobacillus species throughout the entire genus. We have identified a ~200 kb unique super-cluster in al...

Genome sequencing and annotation of Geobacillus sp. 1017, a hydrocarbon-oxidizing thermophilic bacterium isolated from a heavy oil reservoir (China)

The draft genome sequence of Geobacillus sp. strain 1017, a thermophilic aerobic oil-oxidizing bacterium isolated from formation water of the Dagang high-temperature oilfield, China, is presented here. The genome comprised 3.6 Mbp, with the G + C content of 51.74%. The strain had a number of genes responsible for numerous metabolic and transport systems, exopolysaccharide biosynthesis, and deco...

Characteristics of Newly Isolated Geobacillus sp. ZY-10 Degrading Hydrocarbons in Crude Oil.

An obligately thermophilic strain ZY-10 was isolated from the crude oil in a high-temperature oilfield, which was capable of degrading heavy crude oil. Phenotypic and phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that the isolate should be grouped in the genus Geobacillus, which shared thd highest similarity (99%) of the 16S rDNA sequence to Geobacillus stearothermophilus. However, the major cellular fatt...

Geobacillus lituanicus sp. nov.

Obligately thermophilic, aerobic, proteolytic, endospore-forming strain N-3(T) was isolated from a high-temperature oilfield in Lithuania. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis placed this strain in genetic group 5 of the endospore formers. Geobacillus thermoleovorans appeared to be the closest phylogenetic neighbour (99.4 % sequence similarity). The G+C content of strain N-3(T) was 52.5 mol% and mat...

Draft Genome Sequence of Geobacillus sp. Strain FW23, Isolated from a Formation Water Sample

The thermophilic Geobacillus sp. strain FW23 was isolated from the Mehsana oil wells in Gujrat, India, during a screening for oil-degrading bacteria. Here, we report the draft genome sequence of Geobacillus sp. FW23, which may help reveal the genomic differences between this strain and the earlier reported species of the genus Geobacillus.
